An investigation into accessible, effective and affordable animatronics for theatre, The Conductor is a play that combines disciplines by utilizing programming, electronics, mechanical engineering, 3D modeling and design to bring a robotic character to life. The animatronic character takes center stage as the play explores the joys and the hardships of the human condition.
The Conductor was Cormac's University Dissertation project. As a Creative Computing student at Goldsmiths College he combined his passion for theatre and technology to tell a story and demonstrate the benefits of technology in theatre.
The Play was shortlisted for Les Enfants Terribles' prestigious LET Award. Being one of ten productions chosen from many thousands across the UK it was performed in the Greenwich Theatre. In the following months the play had a massively successful sold out run at Goldsmiths College and Cormac received a 1st with honours from the University for the project.
Designing and building the animatronic character was a six month process that ran all the way up to the production. The full build log can be found here. You can also download Cormac's dissertation here.
The full length recording of the play can be found here. It features Delphine Bueche as the human and July Yang as the fox.
